Planning: Mind map

This mind map has a few basic ideas on what things I think would suit my chosen song. For example, when analysing the lyrics found it was a love song, so that gave me the idea of a man and woman couple dancing together in a large room. However, although the song has a few upbeat moments it has an overall forsaken tone, which lead me to consider either a man or woman dancing in a large room on their own to reflect the sorrowful tone of the song.

Plan: analysis of chosen artist lyrics

I'll Have You - Andie Case (Original)
I'll Have You Lyrics:

I'm safe and sound when you're around me
And I thank God that you found me
I know we'll make it cuz you won't break it
Wont regret the steps we're takin

You lift me higher than the fire
Give me all my heart desires
You're the reason I'm believin
That our love is enough

Chorus:
I won't be scared even if my world is fallin' apart
Cuz I know you'll be here with me
Like you've been from the start
All that I've been through brought me closer to you
No I won't be scared even if my world is fallin' apart
Cuz i'll have you.

People doubt us no clue about us
We both know they're just jealous
They can hate it but they won't break it
They only mad that their love is fakin

We're lifted higher than the fire
We have all our heart desires
We're so much better when we're together
Because our love is enough

Chorus

Bridge:
When i'm feelin solo and the world gets so cold
Your love keeps me warm
With you I just know I have found my home

Chorus

Digipaks

The aim of a digipak used by record labels is to promote the sales of its artists, in the same way the video does. However, its features gives fans multiple reasons to buy a CD rather than just downloading the content via a website such as iTunes. A digipak will promote the artists by creating a brand identity. It will represent them in a particular way whilst paying close attention to the target audience and specific genre of music.

Conventions of a digipak; usually created 4 or 6 plate folded piece of card with a CD case in the middle.
Can also include:
A DVD
Lyric book
List of songs
Artist photo or image

Everythings a REMIX - Kirby Ferguson

Remix: to combine and/or edit existing material to produce something new.
Factors linked with producing a remix include; coping which is to reproduce, knockoffs which is reproducing a worse copy, sampling, copyright which is the laws and legislation when using another artists material and emulation.
Everything is a remix is a theory within postmodern media, and gives the idea that nothing is real. It also suggests there is no one sense of truth with reality as nothing is original anymore.
There are a range of techniques that help us to understand media texts as postmodern:
Bricolage- the process of assembling artefacts from bits and pieces of other things
1) Genre hybridisation; mixing different genres together
2) Recycling old forms; previously used material
3) Mixing high and low culture (kitsch)

Intertexualtiy- the mutliple ways that a text is entangled with or contains references to other texts.

Pastiche- (copying in tribute) and Parody (copying with jest).

Confusions over time and space- the subversion of classical cinematic conventions e.g. fragmented narratives, time bending.

Self reflexiveness / self referentiality- texts that openly reflect upon their own processes of artful composition.

Metafiction- fiction that deals with fiction and its conventions.

Style over content- the image and visual excitement over narrative coherence.

Flattening of affect- technology, violence, drugs and the media lead to detached, emotionless lives.

Altered states- drugs and technology provide a darker gateway to new internal realities.

More human than human- artificial intelligence, robots and cybernetics seek to enhance or replace humanity.

Mr V

this is a list of the reasons why

Initially, I was just making a simple music video to achieve a grade at A Level. However, I now realise that due to audience and reception theory viewers want more. Some viewers look to find emotional attachments with in song lyrics and/or what happens within the music video. For example, people going through a breakup may seek a classic love song as these tend to promote the idea that everyone can find true love and happiness when they find the right person; so the viewer will aspire to stay strong and move forward.

At a Clippers' game on the court-side
Watch a nigga' shoot like a .4-5
They mad at me, too, I got more fire
When these bitches see you "go home, Roger" (Go home, Roger)
Tia and Tamara in my bed I'm a smart guy
I ain't fucking with you niggas like apartheid
Hits on my list, check my archive
I'm something so immaculate
Instead of asking what's happenin' rather blastin'
Jackson 5 in the back of an Acura, acting blacker
Than a Bernie Mac, some Charlie Murphys and Akon
The girls that you brought man, where are they from?
Where are they from? We were playin' Playstation
Why you standin' there, say som', girl say som'
No, this ain't a vacation, this is my house, my house

[Hook (x2)]

[Verse 2: Childish Gambino]
Bought a new bath, 8K, nigga
Wanna take shots? AK, nigga
When I ball, I'mma ball King James, nigga
Uncle Ben in my hand, make change, nigga
And I'm out of this world like Tang, nigga
That's a space bar, man, I hate y'all
You only come around when you want to play pool in my hot tub
Ice cream paint job in the garage
I had a menage, and murdered the vaj'
But, afterwards, it was awkward as fuck
Cause I'm nervous as fuck and could not get it up
I-I-I-I-I need a minute, cold water to the face
I-I-I couldn't finish, got the uber from her place
On my porch smoking vapor, hit with the Sunday paper
Listening to the neighbors...

[Hook]

[Outro]
Our neighbors
All alone, no no no no

The 1975 - Chocolate

Hey, now I call it a split 'cause I know that you will
Uh, oh, you bite your friends like chocolate
And you said, "We go where nobody knows, we got guns hidden under our petticoats.
No, we're never gonna quit it, no, we're never gonna quit it, no."

Now run, run away from the boys in the blue,
Oh, my car smells like chocolate
Hey, now I think about what to do, I think about what to say, I think about how to think
Pause it, play it, pause it, play it, pause it

Oh, we go where nobody knows, we've guns hidden under our petticoats
We're never gonna quit it, no, we're never gonna quit it, no
Yeah, we're dressed in black from head to toe,
We've got guns hidden under our petticoats.
No, we're never gonna quit it, no, we're never gonna quit it, no

"Now, you're never gonna quit it, now you're never gonna quit it, now you're never gonna quit it
If you don't stop smoking it," that's what she said.
She said, "We're dressed in black, head to toe.
We've got guns hidden under our petticoats.
And "We're never gonna quit it, no, we're never gonna quit it, no."

Hey, now we're building up speed as we're approaching the hill
Oh, my hair smells like chocolate
Hey, now you say you're gonna quit it but you're never gonna quit it
Go get it, go get it, go get it, go get it, go
And play it cool!

Oh, you said we go where nobody knows, we've guns hidden under our petticoats
No, we're never gonna quit it, no, we're never gonna quit it, no
Yeah, we're dressed in black from head to toe,
We've got guns hidden under our petticoats
We're never gonna quit it, no, we're never gonna quit it, no

Well, I think we better go,
Seriously better go
Said the feds are here you know
Seriously better go, oh, oh,

Well, I think we better go
Said the feds are here you know
Said Rebecca better know
Seriously better go

We go where nobody knows, we've guns hidden under our petticoats
No, we're never gonna quit it, no, we're never gonna quit it, no
Yeah, we're dressed in black from head to toe,
We've guns hidden under our petticoats
We're never gonna quit it, no, we're never gonna quit it, no
No, no, no

Well, I think we better go,
Seriously better go
Said the feds are here you know
Seriously better go, oh, oh,

Well, I think we better go
Said the feds are here you know
Said Rebecca better know
Seriously better go

Analysis 4

                                                                       "Brave"
You can be amazing
You can turn a phrase into a weapon or a drug
You can be the outcast
Or be the backlash of somebody’s lack of love
Or you can start speaking up

Nothing’s gonna hurt you the way that words do
When they settle ‘neath your skin
Kept on the inside and no sunlight
Sometimes a shadow wins
But I wonder what would happen if you

Say what you wanna say
And let the words fall out
Honestly I wanna see you be brave
With what you want to say
And let the words fall out
Honestly I wanna see you be brave

I just wanna see you
I just wanna see you
I just wanna see you
I wanna see you be brave

I just wanna see you
I just wanna see you
I just wanna see you
I wanna see you be brave

Everybody’s been there,
Everybody’s been stared down by the enemy
Fallen for the fear
And done some disappearing,
Bow down to the mighty
Don’t run, just stop holding your tongue

Maybe there’s a way out of the cage where you live
Maybe one of these days you can let the light in
Show me how big your brave is

Say what you wanna say
And let the words fall out
Honestly I wanna see you be brave
With what you want to say
And let the words fall out
Honestly I wanna see you be brave

And since your history of silence
Won’t do you any good,
Did you think it would?
Let your words be anything but empty
Why don’t you tell them the truth?

Say what you wanna say
And let the words fall out
Honestly I wanna see you be brave
With what you want to say
And let the words fall out
Honestly I wanna see you be brave

I just wanna see you
I just wanna see you
I just wanna see you
I wanna see you be brave

I just wanna see you
I just wanna see you
I just wanna see you
See you be brave

I just wanna see you
I just wanna see you
I just wanna see you

I just wanna see you
I just wanna see you
I just wanna see you

Analysis 3

                                                                       "La La La"
                                                                   (feat. Sam Smith)
[2x:]
La la, la la la la la na na na na na,
La la na na, la la la la la na na na na na

Hush, don't speak
When you spit your venom, keep it shut I hate it
When you hiss and preach
About your new messiah 'cause your theories catch fire

I can't find your silver lining
I don't mean to judge
But when you read your speech, it's tiring
Enough is enough

I'm covering my ears like a kid
When your words mean nothing, I go la la la
I'm turning up the volume when you speak
'Cause if my heart can't stop it,
I find a way to block it, I go
La la, la la la la la na na na na na
La la na na, la la la la la na na na na na,
I find a way to block it, I go
La la na na, la la la la la na na na na na [2x]

If our love is running out of time
I won't count the hours, rather be a coward
When our worlds collide
I'm gonna drown you out before I lose my mind

I can't find your silver lining
I don't mean to judge
But when you read your speech, it's tiring
Enough is enough

I'm covering my ears like a kid
When your words mean nothing, I go la la la
I'm turning up the volume when you speak
'Cause if my heart can't stop it,
I find a way to block it, I go
La la, la la la la la na na na na na
La la na na, la la la la la na na na na na,
I find a way to block it, I go
La la, la la la la la na na na na na
La la na na, la la la la la na na na na na,
I find a way to block it, oh
La la, la la la la la na na na na na
La la na na, la la la la la na na na na na,
I find a way to block it, I go
La la na na, la la la la la na na na na na,
La la na na, la la la la la na na na na na,

I'm covering my ears like a kid
When your words mean nothing, I go la la la
I'm turning up the volume when you speak
'Cause if my heart can't stop it,
I find a way to block it, I go

I'm covering my ears like a kid
When your words mean nothing, I go la la la
I'm turning up the volume when you speak
'Cause if my heart can't stop it,
I find a way to block it, I go
La la, la la la la la na na na na na
La la na na, la la la la la na na na na na
La la na na, la la la la la na na na na na
La la na na, la la la la la na na na na na

Analysis 2

                                                                         "Hey Ya"
[Intro]
One, two, three, uh!

[Verse One - Andre 3000]
My baby don't mess around
Because she loves me so
And this I know for sure.
Uh, But does she really wanna
But can't stand to see me
Walk out the door.
Don't try to fight the feelin'
'Cause the thought alone is killing me right now..
Uh, thank god for mom and dad
For sticking two together
'Cause we don't know how...
UH!

[Chorus:]
Hey... ya.
Hey ya.
Hey... ya.
Hey ya.
Hey... ya.
Hey ya.
Hey... ya.
Hey ya.

[Verse Two - Andre 3000]
You think you've got it
Oh, you think you've got it
But got it just don't get it
'Til there's nothing at all
We get together
Oh, we get together
But separate's always better when there's feelings involved
If what they say is "Nothing is forever"
Then what makes, then what makes, then what makes
Then what makes, what makes, what makes love the exception
So why you, why you
Why you, why you, why you are we so in denial
When we know we're not happy here...
Y'all don't want me here you just wanna dance

[Chorus]
Hey... ya. (OH OH)
Hey ya. (OH OH)
Hey... ya. (Don't want to meet your daddy, OH OH)
Hey ya. (Just want you in my Caddy OH OH)
Hey... ya. (OH OH, don't want to meet yo' mama OH OH)
Hey ya. (Just want to make you cumma OH OH)
Hey... ya. (I'm, OH OH I'm, OH OH)
Hey ya. (I'm just being honest OH OH, I'm just being honest)

[Bridge - Andre 3000]
Hey, alright now
Alright now fellas yeah!
Now what's cooler than bein' cool?
(ICE COLD!)
I can't hear ya'
I say what's, what's cooler than bein' cool?
(ICE COLD!)
Whooo...
Alright, alright, alright, alright
Alright, alright, alright, alright
Alright, alright, alright, alright
Alright, alright,
OK now ladies (yeah!)
Now we gon' break this thing down in just a few seconds
Now don't have me to break this thing down for nothing
Now I wanna see y'all on your baddest behavior
Lend me some sugar, I am your neighbor
Uh!Here we go know...
Shake it, shake, shake it, shake it (oh oh)
Shake it, shake it, shake, shake it, shake it, shake it (oh oh)
Shake it, shake it like a Polaroid Picture, shake it, shake it
Shh you got to, shake it, shh shake it, shake it, got to shake it
(Shake it sugar) shake it like a Polaroid Picture

[Verse Three - Andre 3000 (Repeating "Shake it" in background)]
Now all Beyoncé's and Lucy Liu's
And baby dolls, get on the floor
(Get on the floor)
You know what to do.
You know what to do.
You know what to do!

[Chorus]
Hey... ya. (OH OH)
Hey ya. (OH OH)
Hey... ya. (OH OH)
Hey ya. (Uh oh, Hey ya)
Hey... ya. (OH OH)
Hey ya. (Uh, uh, OH OH)
Hey... ya. (OH OH)
Hey ya. (OH OH)

"I Will Never Let You Down"
Tell me, baby, what we're gonna do
I'll make it easy, got a lot to lose
Watch the sunlight coming through
Open the window, let it shine on you

'Cause I've been sick and working all week
And I've been doing just fine (Hey!)
You've been tired of watching me
Forgot to have a good time, boy (Hey!)
You can't take it all these faces
Never keeping it real
I know exactly how you feel

When you say you've had enough
And you might just give it up
Oh, oh
I will never let you down
When you're feeling low on love
I'll be what you dreaming of
Oh, oh
I will never let you down

(Hey!)
Oh, oh
I will never let you down
(Hey!)
Oh, oh
I will never let you down

There's a million ways to go
Don't be embarrassed if you lose control
On the rooftop, now you know
Your body's frozen and you lost your soul

'Cause I've been sick and working all week
And I've been doing just fine (Hey!)
You've been tired of watching me
Forgot to have a good time, boy (Hey!)
You can't take it all these faces
Never keeping it real
I know exactly how you feel

When you say you've had enough
And you might just give it up
Oh, oh
I will never let you down
When you're feeling low on love
I'll be what you dreaming of
Oh, oh
I will never let you down

(Hey!)
Oh, oh
I will never let you down
(Hey!)
Oh, oh
I will never let you down

Let me take you where you never go
Have a little fun, it's the only way we know
Let me show you what you never see
You know how to love only when you're holding me

When you say you've had enough
And you might just give it up
Oh, oh
I will never let you down
When you're feeling low on love
I'll be what you dreaming of
Oh, oh
I will never let you down

When you say you've had enough
And you might just give it up
Oh, oh
I will never let you down
When you're feeling alone in love
I'll be what you dreaming of
I will never let you down

History of music videos

Music videos can also be known as "promos" due to the way they are used as promotional devices. Sometimes, music videos are termed short-form music videos to distinguish them from full length films pertaining to music. For example, in the 1940's, Walt Disney released Fantasia which is an animated film based around pieces of famous classical music. This is an example of a full length film promoting the music. http://youtu.be/mHTnJNGvQcA

Modern era; key innovation in the development of the music videos include video recording, editing processes, visual effects, high quality colour video tape recorders and portable video cameras.
In the 1980's music artists began to use more sophisticated effects in their videos and added a storyline to the music video. For example, Michael JacksonsThriller revolutionised the consept of the short film and took the music video format to another level. http://youtu.be/sOnqjkJTMaA

Brief

When being introduced to our advanced media portfolio, we were given a choice of three tasks to complete, which include:

A promotion package for the release of an album, to include a music promo video, no longer than five minutes duration, together with:
  • a cover for its release as part of a digipack (CD/DVD package)
  • a magazine advertisement for the digipack (CD/DVD package)

An advertising package for a new product or service, to include two TV advertisements, together with
  • a TV programme sponsorship sequence
  • a radio advertisement

A short film in its entirety, lasting approximately five minutes, which may be live action or animation or a combination of both, together with:
  • a poster for the film
  • a film magazine review page featuring the film
I have chosen to do the promotion package and music video task. This is because this was the brief that most appealed to me as it looks interesting and will allow me to be creative with the genre of music and what i will include in the music video.
